Bottoms Up

Updated: Aug 3, 2020

As many of you know, I like to drink. A. Lot. No, not just alcohol, you Naughty Nancy! I'm talking smoothies, juices, kombucha, DIY Ginger Bugs and Chaga Tea. Why? With these drinks you can:

  • Get those greens without salads

  • Increase fiber

  • Boost gut health

  • Get that zing of energy

  • Better adapt during stress

  • And yes, enjoy martini's with girlfriends or a hot date

Let me backup. What exactly are these drinks?

1. You're likely familiar with smoothies. They're basically fruits and veggies blended to create a creamy smooth drink (or bowl!) Here's my fav. The great thing about smoothies is they are chock full of fiber which slows the absorption of the sugar. This means they are safe for people concerned about their blood sugar levels. Smoothies sustainably boost energy, providing that full feeling and sweep out toxins in your gut (thank you fiber!).

2. Juices are similar to smoothies sans the fiber. They are excellent for getting the nutrients from many, many leafy greens without compromising taste or texture. (Lemon juice actually cuts the bitterness of kale!) Plus it's a GREAT way to get your loved ones on board. My husband and I discovered juicing when we were dating and today he regularly preps ingredients the night before and I juice them in the morning. Here's our favorite. It is packed with vitamin C and offers a zing of cell-nourishing energy without caffeine.

3. Kombucha and Ginger Bugs are fermented drinks that you can make at home. As such, they do have a small amount of processed sugar which aids in the fermentation process. The upside? These fermented drinks increase the good bacteria in your gut. (The inside of your gut is a bit like a shag rug. When things get stuck, they get really stuck. Fermented foods offer the equivalent of a good carpet vacuum and wash.)

This week I had a blast making a DIY Ginger Bug and Raw Yogurt. SO easy! 4. Finally, Chaga Tea is a dark tea made from a fungus called Chaga that grows on birch trees. It is excellent with maple syrup and its naturally bitter taste makes it a great substitute for coffee. (We ground and bagged our first chaga tea at my family's home in NY. During MD winters it's our go-to before juice. 1 tea bag in the kettle lasts us a week! ) Chaga is adaptogenic. It helps normalize the body so that it when it encounters stressful situations, the physical response is less volatile and more sustainable. It does all that without altering one's state of mind. Now that's sexy.
